Grass is the Color of Love

Tuesday a day for shopping
sad pantry running bare
An anniversary to remember
such a lovely little affair

Jim and I are now together
for years and years at last
After waiting months to see him
his business overseas is mowing grass

But now retired and happy
a dinner I decide to make
And what would be more fitting?
Than a grass-seed chocolate cake!

Oh so delicious I know it
oozing layers of decadant brown
One plate won't be enough
seconds and thirds will be going down

So to a feed store I hurried
secret recipe stored away
As any good wife I protected
the recipe for grass-seed cake

I bought six pounds of the best
for Jim is the kind of guy
Who deserves all natural ingredients
and determined I was to try

I made a mound of decadence
put candles on my prize
Oh Jim would be so excited
it's amazing what a devoted wife tries

That night just after dinner
candlelight dinner settling well
Would he like my cake? I wondered
It was just the time to tell

I cut big lumps of chocolate
with grass seed such a sin
Watching my husband's face light up
As a big bite was shoved right in

Not two seconds later
Jim writhered on the floor
Amazed I watched him loving
the bite he must adore

But the medics told me other
reasons were to blame
For we quickly discovered
He was allergic when they came

Poor Jim is on a gurney
I fear now for his health
But I'll sit here and eat it
juicy cake all to myself!

It looks like Sarah Jessica Parker's alter ego 'Carrie' isn't the only one getting married in the gorgeous gown she wore down the big-screen aisle. A three-quarter length version by Vivienne Westwood sold out by noon the day it hit the stores. It sold retail at a whopping $9,875!

I only recommend that brides-to-be pass on the feathery headpiece. Even Carrie had a little trouble pulling that one off.

I'm scheduled to walk in a local fashion show. This will be the first show I've done since leaving Seattle and the first one I've considered since the pregnancy... which is one reason last month was the first meeting/fitting I've been to.
Accepting the invitation to model for local designers was one thing, but being in my last trimester of carrying a 7 plus pound boy was another all together. (They contacted me from my portfolio on a modeling group's website.) It's five weeks since delivery and I'm back to pre-baby weight. Not quite pre-baby body, but it's getting closer.
I'm anxious to find out what Nashville is all about.

The Bachelor season finale

I can't say I'm a fan of the over-dramatized show The Bachelor whose unlucky couples don't seem to last much longer than the airing of their final episode. But last night I did tune in for one simple reason. First, he was from my much-missed home Seattle, and seemed to be a rare breed there from my own personal dating experience. Mainly, that he sounded like a decent guy who was actually ready for a long-term committed relationship... or so it seemed...

But in true Seattle bachelor fashion, Jason soon showed his true colors. After debating over his last two women, and actually CHANGING his pick of female counterparts from Melissa to "oh nevermind, I meant Molly!", he made the (lucky?) girl feel like a true Queen. Who wouldn't swoon for a man who can't decide if he wants to be with you or another woman??

The show left viewers with a sour taste for the pitfalls of single life and reminded me why I left Seattle men behind to persue a long distance relationship instead. My only advice to Molly? It's time to pick up a copy of He's Just Not That Into You.

It was time. It was necessary. I did it myself...

That's right, I took my outgrown highlights and went back to the dark side. I went black. I hate those mystery boxes of dye at the store, but didn't have the $80 on hand to get a professional dye job. Actually, the original plan was for a deep black/brown similar to Angelina Jolie or Penelope Cruz. I bought the wrong color.

I'm not so sure about the results. The verdict is out. Maybe I'd be better off saving some cash and salvaging the color by a pro who can give me the look I was going for.

High fashion runway debuts at the spring-summer 2009 collection in Paris wrapped up yesterday. Sneak previews included Givenchy and Lacroix designs, and Karl Lagerfeld’s couture design for Chanel.

Designers garnered inspiration from the 17th century, using puffy sleeves, fitted torsos, and plenty of embellishments. In light of current consumer cut-backs, the creative genuises of the show were pleased to be able to let loose for the chance to do something above and beyond with their talents for the sake of pure entertainment.

What's the latest craze in celebrity fashion? Colored jeans! This bold statement is a favorite for many of the stars.
I have to say that this look is another tricky trend to pull together. When it comes to that much color, it's easy to look more like a side-show cirucus on two legs than a glamour girl. If you do opt for bright and bold, be sure to keep your top half more subdued. Too much going on with your outfit it going to have you competing for a spot in the latest magazine layout as a featured figure of fashion horrors.
Personally, I don't plan to change from the blue color palette of my jeans. Ripped, patched, and varying shades is enough for me without stepping into the wilds of crayola.

Brittany Spears tv special: Setting the Record Straight

I watched the Brittany Spears interview last night. It was a special she did called "Setting the Record Straight." Afterwards, I have to say that I am impressed. Yes, there is more that goes on in a celebrity's life than we would know from the outside, and I'm sure the pressures and challenges of growing up in the spotlight have been tough. But she really does sound.... mature?
She seems more settled, more whole than before. I think the biggest downfall in this story was how she always clings to her 'man' and is, like many females, desperately seeking her soulmate. But when you're rich and famous, people like Kevin Federline aren't the cure-all answer. She does seem to genuinely care about her children and understand she needs to grow up and be there for them. Cheers to that. And cheers to coming out with another award-winning album in such a short time after the meltdown. But most of all, cheers to finally beginning to find yourself and your identity apart from your man.

Skinny jeans have been hugging the slim physique of rockers for years now. From the grunge scene to street chic, men are adopting this trend on and off the stage. But should this look be a keeper or is it high time it took a stage-left exit?
Personally, I find very few categories of men can pull off the skinny jean look. You need to have a naturally slender build with tight enough abs to keep the dreaded waistband "overhang" at bay. For rockers crooning to fans and girating all over the stage, this look (usually) works. I've gotten used to musicians and artists adorning thigh-hugging pants. However, if you don't look like the 'artisy' type, it falls flat. If a man hopes to look 'sexy,' wearing skinny jeans would guarantee a category of women (which I belong to) would not find them attractive by default. In short, leave it to the true artists and creatives to dress the part. If you don't live and breathe it, it's time to adopt your own style and find something that works for you.

The news stations were buzzing this morning with news highlights from the election yesterday. At one point, an interviewer told First Lady Michelle Obama that she was more impressive as a fashion icon than the incomparable Jackie O. I was thoroughly irritated.
Really? SERIOUSLY??
Mrs. Obama is by all means fashionable with a look that works for her, but why not leave it at that instead of placing her on a pedestal above someone whose fashion sense has set a fashion standard that has PROVEN to last through time? I highly doubt that future fashion gurus are going to swap Jackie for Michelle as a fashion standard.

Winter Essentials

The last few weeks I've spent preparing for the Fall/Winter changes. The morning air is crisper, the mornings are dusky, and my warm mug of morning coffee is all the more enticing. In preparation for the winter chill, I've started stocking up on a few fashion essentials.

A Robe
It's time to invest in a plush robe. Nothing feels better after a long day followed by a hot shower when you can wrap up in a robe and slippers.
An Oversized Sweater
We're seeing them everywhere this season and it's no wonder everyone's falling in love with oversized sweaters. Pair one with tights, leggings, or over a pair of jeans.

Boots
This is one item you can't do without when the weather turns cold. Boots are great through all kinds of winter, versatile, and WARM!

Scarves
Make sure to have at least one scarf on hand this winter. Besides being warm, you can wear them in so many ways. Tie it around your neck, over your hair, or drape one as a belt.

It now appears that the self-proclaimed diva, Lindsey Lohan, has been cut from her last two scheduled appearances on the Ugly Betty television series. While Ms. Lohan's sources point to America Ferrera as the culprit, America's entourage points the finger back to a certain red-headed (ahem, Lohan) startlet who has trouble making timely appearances on set. Texas is full of colorful, friendly "folks." As I've gotten to know more of them, I really do admire their no nonsense approach to life as well as their ability to make a stranger feel right at home. However, people-watching in this state is something to behold!

The fashion sense here is a wide scope of styles and tastes. You see everything straight from the pages of Vogue, to casual chic, jeans and t-shirt, and every range of western wear imaginable. The 40 and over crowd has a fashion sense all of their own. There is no self-consciousness when it comes to what they want to wear and they will wear the most amazingly wrong ensambles with shameless pride.

Look What I Found!

So, I've been searching for a new coat before the winter season begins to blow in. It seems like I have a closet full of perfectly decent jackets, but last year I still ended up mostly wrapped in the oversized jacket I stole from my boyfriend. Mine of course were the typical type of "girl jacket." (i.e. they are more fashionable than functionally warm and too fitted to wear a sweater or many layers underneath without looking like you've spent too much time at the holiday buffet table)

After shopping online and browsing a few stores, I decided that what I really wanted was a vintage faux fur. I came across a fantastic vintage shop downtown, but the coat I tried on had two problems. 1) It was more than double my budget and 2) It was real fur. Mink to be exact. But TODAY, lo and behold, I came across the perfect brown vintage faux fur coat. It was tucked on a rack outside the fitting room of a second hand store, obviously discarded after an unsucessful fitting. Elation! I snagged it up. Felt the heaviness of it's warmth and silkiness of delicate lining. Trying it on was like falling into a warm embrace. And for all of $12, it was mine!

It's been many years since I first became a vegetarian. The decision was simple for me. Although my mother's skills at cooking a roast left something a little stringy, a little rubbery staring back at me on my dinner plate, this wasn't the only reason I decided to go "veggie." The truth was, I didn't really like meat. Sure a large pool of ketchup could get most flesh to slide down my throat and a little barbecue could taste pretty good, but my hamburgers quickly began to resemble a bun-free pile of salad with only a quarter size piece of burger atop the greens.

Another reason I chose veggie was that I simply FELT better eating this way. I was one of those rare teens who actually enjoyed eating my fruits and veggies, didn't mind beans, nuts, or tofu, and brought bountiful salads to school almost every day. Instead of leaving lunchtime fatigued and overstuffed, I felt sustained to finish the rest of the day.

Now that I know a little more about the meat production process, it's no wonder I would feel better without partaking in their goods. Mass producing most food products, especially ones that involve live creatures, is bound to have problems. Time versus money always gets in the way. Quite frankly, I don't trust what they do including what they now feed the animals, all stress-induced adrenaline that is running through animals at slaughter houses, the conditions they are kept in, and the quality of the resulting product. The thought of meat does not turn my stomach, the process taking an animal from start to finished steak dinner does. At least with whole foods you know what you are getting. Yes, I have to think about pesticides (that can mostly be washed away) and genetic manipulation, but I also have choices. I can shop at farmer's markets or buy organic. I feel like I have more choice in the matter.

Now that I'm vegan, I feel the same about dairy and egg products. My body likes the alternatives, I like the soy substitutes, and it's a win-win situation for me.

BLM Wild Horse Adoption This Weekend

The Bureau of Land Management held a wild horse adoption and expo this weekend. I heard about it on the radio and my ears perked up immediately. I've always been fascinated by these creatures and the idea that we still have the chance to purchase and "tame" a wild horse.
I've heard of two cases of people who adopted a wild horse from the program and began working with them. While I'm sure they are all different, these two (a male gelding and female mare) turned out to be a real handful. The gelding has spent four years in professional training with only an ocassional day that he will put in a good workout without protest. Could it be that he preferred the open wilds to his new found stable? Or maybe an arena is just not challenging or stimulating enough to make him want to partner up with his rider? In any case, he is a loved and a cursed member of the family who bought him.
The second horse, the mare, became the best friend of a teenage girl. They struggled together through the gentling and training process and have been able to create a special bond in the end. The horse remains a feisty little thing that refuses to canter at less than full speed, but her rider doesn't really care.

From these two instances I can only come to the conclusion that these wild horses have an ancestory of survival making them a) Hardy b) Quite stubborn and c) Born with an iron will that will continue and sometimes be used against a human who tells them what to do

I snapped this shot the other day of my dog, Heinrich (aka "Henry"). I thought I'd share it and a little of his history.

I bought Henry from a woman who also owned his sister when he was four months old. He's a French Bulldog, now 3 years old and the most laid back dog I've ever owned. Born in Hungary, he came to the U.S. with his sister and was introduced to grass for the first time! (He was born during the winter season there.) I showed him sucessfully as a puppy before we retired him to be a companion pet. Here, he was sunning himself by the window and starting to fall asleep. I actually think he may be narcoleptic! He will literally start to close his eyes while in a sitting position, waking himself up when his head begins to drop until he gives up and curls up to sleep like a normal dog.

Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minnillo hit it off from the beginning. What appeared to be a rebound romance has blossomed into something more. Nick has kept pretty low key since the divorce... I grew to like him on the Newlyweds reality show and have to admit I still haven't gotten used to seeing him with a new flame.

Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore have survived despite public doubt. I never saw Ashton falling for an older woman, but celebrities are full of surprises. This is one relationship I'd love to know more about and how they make it work.

Just to mix things up a bit, I've decided to dedicate this post to some great products.

First, is Jergen's Natual Glow Daily Moisturizer for body. This product is a great way to keep your skin sun-kissed with radiance all year long. The product works much like a tinting lotion, with results after the first application. You can choose from fair, medium, and dark, but I recommend at least using the medium tone lotion. As with any tinted lotion, be sure to apply it evenly to keep the color even, although sreaks are nearly impossible. No one can tell that I don't tan or sunbathe! Retail is $6.99 at any pharmacy or grocery store. Also available for face.
Laura Mercier makes a great line of polish. Her new limited edition colors are perfect for Fall 2008. My favorite is Sterling, silver shimmer. The colors are rich and the gloss is chip-resistant, making it a perfect pick for beautifully manicured nails. Retail is $15 and can be ordered online.

This was a fun project I did last week using beads and tile. It turned out kind of funky. I do all kinds of furniture pieces, including chairs, benches, tables, signs, etc.-- This being my first in years. I'm thinking about offering them at a few shops around town, but haven't decided yet. I have a lot of work to do before I had enough pieces, but it's been on my mind.

This antique child's rocking chair is my latest find. I picked it up for $4 at a garage sale and plan to recover the seat, work on the paint, and add a little artistic flair. We'll see what it turns into!

Pet Peeve: Panty Hose and Open Toes

When it comes to fashion, we all have a few things that simply make our skin crawl and avert our eyes. It might be a red carpet flop, a runway disaster, or a bystander on the street that catches the blame, but nevertheless, fashion eyesores are all around us. One of my "Fashion Peeves" is panty hose or tights worn with open toe shoes.

Here we have Helen Mirren, just one example of my personal fashion "no-no." The eye skims down her beautifully cut dress to--- agast! What is that?! Stocking-covered toes peeking out from her strappy footwear. No, no, no, Helen... your stylist was either very wrong, or obviously let you sink this one on your own.
Here is another example of a "cute-sy" fashion statement that leaves our candy striper faceless. (On purpose, I'm sure.) On a two-year old, I could call this cute. In a grade school play, maybe appropriate. But anywhere else, and you're never going to be taken seriously.
Instead, go for a more natural look and opt to bare those toes. If you only exfoliate, use a tinted moisturizer, and get a good pedicure, there's no need to cover up. Take my advice, and the extra prep will be well worth the outcome.

Kloe, who was on parole for a previous drunk driving offense was caught violating the terms of her parole and has been put behind bars for an unspecified amount of time.

Cute, sassy, and stylish, I have to dish on Hayden Panettiere. She's the newest pre-teen glamour girl to be holding her own in the Hollywood jungle. With a notable acting career, her pleasing appearance on the red-carpet is impressive for such a pint-sized starlett. We should keep our eye on this young lady-- she's going to be busy trend-setting in 2008.

Hayden loves to flash her winning smile. Seen here at a movie premiere, she pulls off a classy up-do with soft framing around her face.

Hayden's newest endorsement is for Candie's shoes. The ads are flirty and fun, shot with sweet treats and even five fluffy, white puppies-- much to Hayden's delight. She couldn't keep the rolly polly pups out of her dressing room or her lap!

Project Runway Finalist Showcases Line

Lindsey's latest photo stunt may have landed her on the cover of New York Magazine, but the copycat Marilyn Monroe doesn't quite live up to the original. With the Hollywood struggle to find originality, Lohan's attempt to place herself on the same pedestal as the original blonde bombshell did more than show just how little resemblance she bears to the icon; it appears she's lost her own persona. The shots, re-touched to hilt, made her look like the little girl playing dress-up, who hopes to one day fall into the fascade of sex-appeal. It was all unappealing; So much for LL's new image post-rehab.

Located in New York's lower east side, this store limits itself to dresses made by international designers and specializes in finding practical pieces suggested by their helpful staff. Handmade lingerie from London, jewelry, and candles are also available from around the globe. Makeup artists wait to give you a fresh look just before heading back into the streets, hopefully slinging a new dress.
As a side note, Saturday's are dedicated to eyebrow artist Rosie, who offers free consultations from 12-8pm.
